Being at a distance from the US election and not a citizen gives a different perspective on the process. I have found it so fascinating and a great learning experience to be able to take in the views and ideas of so many intelligent and intensely engaged contributors to the Field, and to join in as a commenter myself.
Now that the Primary is over, we are entering a new phase. In addition to the Field being transplanted (to a better climate) we have the Fieldhands site, Fieldhands Abroad, individual Fieldhands writing their own blogs here, and all the planning for election-related action. All this in the few months since Al started writing this blog.
Al laid to rest my inner Chicken Little very early in this campaign--I would say by Super Tuesday. There have been many suspenseful moments after that, of course ( I was constantly reading the Field, so C.L. didn't have a chance to come back!) My point is that Obama will win, and that is terrific. But the process of this campaign has unleashed something very powerful that must remain active and alive after Obama is inaugurated. People are recognizing their own value and power in becoming involved. Talking, revealing to others-- whether loved ones or strangers-- what they want and hope for, not just what they fear.
Getting organized. That is empowering and exciting.
Perhaps one thing we can do, as Fieldhands around the world, is to share some of our positive responses and vision emerging at this time of ferment, a diversity of thoughts and ideas reflecting the fact that this election could be the hinge on which a lot of change is generated worldwide, not just in the USA. And letting American citizens know that we want them to be as aware of who we are as we are of them. Actually, I must amend that. All of us will benefit from learning more about each other, not just Americans. For instance, BondiBeachViews (Bondi) has promised to provide info on the "New Politics" in Australia, something that could transform politics here in Canada if we were to pick up on it.
Now that I have expressed this idea, I will have to think a bit on what to contribute from a Canadian perspective. What's it like there in India?
I do not know if any fieldhands are out in India at this moment. Let me know if you know someone.
Yay, glad to have you here at Fieldhands Abroad, (amk)!
Please feel free to check out our comment wall, and add your own self-introduction if you so choose.
We are hoping to come up with practical things to do to support this movement from beyond the US, whether we are US citizens or not. So far we have talked about gathering info on local media outlets in our respective areas to help Fieldhands gain press accreditation at the Conventions...
I suppose that the split from the Ex-Field has diverted energy and attention from our actual purpose but in a sense it's all good as it is an education in how the current "System" actually works and instructs us that if we organize and take responsibility rather than depending on established powers that be, we will not be at their mercy and can channel our collective will in an effective way.
Looking forward to your participation,
Nancy
