I know what you mean Jeff. When I see a wild animal in the city, I sometimes get a sinking feeling as I pass a development a mile down. They are getting displaced.
Although southern Italy is warmer and I have a few relatives there, the north does provide more connection to the rest of the continent... plus all that marvelous Renaissance culture. I was thinking of starting out in Siena. The only places I've visited so far are Roma and Assisi. Anything you can share with me about the country will be most welcome!
I saw a coyote about two months ago in my neighborhood. (Signal Mountain, TN..this is Chattanooga basically) I really love the idea of wild animals still managing to inhabit urban areas. Like urban wilderness or something. Wouldn't it make an excellent study? Wouldn't it be cool if every urban development was required by mandate to have a certain population of certain animals inhabiting it? Each dev could be required to pay a tax or something if they couldn't satisfy the mandate.
I won't return to live in the US, either. It is less stressful here. The people aren't so materialistic, and most of the kids don't care that much about being cool. There are fewer raised eyebrows when a boy likes pink or takes ballet lessons. My neighbor is a foot shorter than his wife, and he doesn't feel diminished. People don't step back with an index-finger cross when someone mentions socialism.
A couple years ago, I moved from Holland to Belgium with the tall/short couple I mentioned. I'd been married to a Dutch man from SA, and when the marriage didn't work out, I looked online for another place to live so I could stay in Europe. To my joy, I discovered that I was an Italian national! It turns out my mom's dad hadn't naturalized until after she was born, and this made her and her descendants Italian citizens. Well, you can imagine how I wished I'd learned this a long time ago, but it was still a brass ring. I felt that in some way this made up for the fact that I'd spent a rare1943 copper penny as a penny when I was kid (see AggroLee's avatar in the TN group).
Anyhoo, the plan is to move to Italy in a couple years. It turns out that the weather over here is pretty cloudy and cool and often wet... even in Florence right now. But at least we don't have the deeply bitter winters of the Midwest. I spent three years as a letter carrier in Aurora and once delivered mail in -20 with a wind chill that brought the temp to -60. To see me was to recall the image of Dr. Zhivago after his long trek through icy wilderness on his way back home.
I'm now a distance educator with two schools based in California, so it's possible to work just about anywhere in the world. That's the key. Get a job or career you can take with you.
I'm sure glad the primary season has ended... now I can get back to work!
By the way, does your brother in Austria have any interest in what we're doing?
Thanks for taking the time to dialog with me on this, Jeff. It gives my sympathies balance. The article did mention the children, and I saw the danger, but I tend to take the side of the one being hurt in the name of protection. I guess the lesson to be learned is for police to carry tranquilizer guns. And as a matter of principle, that's probably a good idea. The darts could be used on people when the situation warrants it, before resorting to tasers and bullets.
That being said, I return to thanking you for carrying on a reasoned conversation. That's what I so appreciate about us in this group.
What a wonderful story, what an adorable coyote, and what an original avatar!
I was stressed by the way the guy handled him, though. I mean, if you restrict the jaws, can't you get another guy to carry the animal? The little fellow looked traumatized and could've been injured... and then would he have been "mercifully" put away?
And then when police shot the cougar, they yelled: "We got him! We got him!" as if they were thrilled by the hunt.
There was a young Brazilian murdered point blank by UK police. They had him pinned down in a metro car. The guy could do nothing and was of no threat to anyone. And they executed him in cold blood in front of passengers.
Cold hearts...
Sigh...
Well, at least we have people like the folks at the sandwich shop who contributed to the coyote's care. I thought there was something not quite wolfish about him... I guess it was his long snout. And the one wolf I've met seemed to have blue eyes.
I didn't want to go off topic on the discussion, but have you seen the Benazir Bhutto interview where she casually mentions that bin Laden is dead, as if the whole world knew about it?

Welcome to my Home Page
My avatar is a coyote that wandered into a Quiznos in the heart of downtown Chicago one day in April 2007. He sat for awhile in the beverage cooler, just mellowing out and cooling down. If the story interests you, a decent video is at MSNBC. And then there is the cougar this year...

Hope you've been having a good summer. This story in today's news reminded me of your coyote. It's sweet the way the animals touched noses.
