I have several real lives apart from my electronic life here and elsewhere in the internets tubes. For several years now I have been on leave (getting to be a permanent leave at this point..) from the PhD program in economics at the University of Utah. I still teach for the department - of all things - the writing lab. I contribute business and general pieces to our local monthly magazine, Catalyst Magazine, a 25 year old institution for the creative class, which lives large and wide, here in Salt Lake and environs. My latest article was on
the Utah delegation at the Denver Convention, which I wrote while there whooping it up with other Fieldhands, Field readers and, of course, the great Al, at the Big Tent and elsewhere. All the fun details of Denver and the amazing Fieldhands there are posted over at the Denver Posse group page on this site.
I used to have a life as a single parent but my two sons are quickly becoming independent from their mom - can I hear an Amen! So, I spend all that mommy energy on the cat situation (cute pics and details below).
I am also the most well know psychic in Utah, stemming from my participation on a nationally recognized morning radio show and the highest rated Alternative Music station in the country. Through it, I get to meet many, many complex, wonderful, interesting memebers of the Gen Y and Millenium generations. I have utter confidence in these to continue making our society and culture better and better. Witness what they contributed to the last election. I have no fear for the future.
For fun, I am also posting to my Fieldhands blog a little piece I wrote on Presidential Palmistry.
Here is my offical Psychic Lady bio.

More on the interesting cat situation:
Schrodinger Has the extra toe - he looks like he is walking around on baseball mitts. It also explains why he is so very excellent at the keyboard.

Doppleganger showed up a few weeks ago..she is also a Maine Coon Cat, so I am still pondering the meaning of it all.

The Latest Activity column on the front page is the heartbeat of the site -- who joined, who created a post, etc. Also, when something is "featured" it appears there. (I did a test and featured my own LA area post about the pasadena meeting. And lo, it showed up in the activity log.)
So, what is the best way to keep tabs on what's happening with the site when I'm not here?
I use another service called FriendFeed, which is a way to keep tabs on all content posted by my friends, according to their various feeds. See my feed, here: http://friendfeed.com/susankitchens
But what's more is to see what I see when logged in, which are the feeds of all my "friends" -- real, and imaginary. I hope that this link works for you: http://friendfeed.com/susankitchens/friends
(Imaginary friends are ones you create for others who aren't on the service. I've got one for Al Giordano, for instance. I don't think that my imaginary friends are viewable by the public at large).
Another neato factoid about FriendFeed: You can create lists and put different friends into each. So I've got one for economics, and one for politics, one for my personal friends, etc. and then "view all" -- These lists make it easy to drill down into whatever area I'm most interested in viewing at the moment.
So, all that is preamble about FriendFeed. The important part is that I made an imaginary friend of Fieldhands, and included the main page feed which puts the site's latest activity into the place where I often check to see "what is going on out in internet land?" ... which will probably result in my showing up more often, since "what is new" will come to me.
It's great that you are hopping on the welcome wagon. I really don't want to miss anyone and it's good to know we have backup. :0)
You know as far as encouraging people, I figure the fact that they have joined indicates they will join in when they feel the spirit move them.
Otherwise they would lurk.
But if you have any ideas I would be more than open to implementing them and give it a shot. As long as I don't have to bake muffins.
I've been watching the front page and when someone new shows up I just leave a comment on their page saying:

I have the same trouble as Dave, haven't found a way to send you a message or email. Odd, I know I sent Al a message just yesterday.
I live in Boulder, a half hour from Denver, excluding parking time. I can do any needed errands. I'm also open to suggestion of other things needed. I can help supply food and water if needed somewhere. I could do some blogging of out-of-the-way subjects, perhaps. Or, of our Field Hands operations? That's a thought that just struck me this sec. Thanks again.
How about emailing me your email address? Then I'll email you my contact info. I'm at cantelow@csd.net .
Make sure to include fieldhands in the subject line and it will be tagged in my email as important.
A while back you mentioned that you’d like to borrow a laptop during the convention. Depending on your specific needs I’d be happy to lend you one of the two that I own. The first is a Dell Inspiron 3000, and the other is an Inspiron 7000. Just be aware that both are going to be a bit big, old, and heavy.
For the basic stuff, (802.11b WiFi, word processing, web editing, email, etc.), both will work quite well, but only the i7000 will handle video editing. I figure that if I do any video I’ll take it home at night and do the editing on my desktop computer, so I’ll probably use the one that you’re not borrowing only for notes, posting, and word processing. When not in use I'll loan it out to others as needed. I had hoped to buy a new notebook computer before the convention, but money is really tight at the moment, (bills from a visit to the emergency department last month took away all of my discretionary money for a while), so yours will be the only full-time loaner.
I’m going to archive the contents of both computers and reinstall everything on them this week— Right now I’ve been using them as servers running Linux, so I doubt that they’d be particularly useful to you at the moment! (However, if you happen to be an experienced linux person, let me know and I’ll install any build that you want!)
Here is what I have in mind:
+ Windows XP SP3 w/ all updates. [Vista may also be an option, but I’m not sure.]
+ OpenOffice 2.4.1
+ MS Office [not sure what version I have an unused license for, but it will be semi-current.]
+ Firefox [with a few extensions] & common web plugins.
+ Firefox RSS feeds for a number of blogs and useful local & national news sites.
+ Antivirus software
+ Adobe Acrobat [Hopefully the full version, but at least the reader.]
+ A program to help find good wireless access points and look at signal strength, etc.
+ A few open source video editing tools [if needed]
+ An extra battery [if I can find them]
+ An external mouse if you want it.
+ CD-RW drive [i7000 only] or a CD-ROM drive [i3000]
+ A case, including a laptop lock
+ A USB flash drive for backup, portability, etc.
That’s the basic setup that I have in mind-- Let me know if I’ve left anything out or you have any questions or requests. Assuming I can afford to attend, I’ll plan on giving it to you at the fundraiser. Otherwise we’ll work something out as the convention approaches.
On an unrelated note, I was amazed to see today’s post naming us Field Hands of the month. For me, it was a wonderful, albeit coincidental, birthday present, but we both know that you’ve been the one moving us forward. I just want you to know that I’m flattered to share the “stage” with you, and you are the one that deserves the praise. I really appreciate your work. (Well, you and "Deb Colorado," but I’m not going to get into that!)
Keep up the good work,
DW
