I saw your note on Pam's page. As far as I know (and Pam can back me up on this, or not), quotations marks go after the period when writing for Americans and before the period when writing for Brits. Same with the comma. Question marks and exclamation points go outside the quotation marks, unless they are part of the quote.

I caught your question about Iran. I'm also concerned about Afghanistan. This is the first thing I read today, and later I wondered why I was feeling so down:

What right does the US have to bully so many countries and kill so many people?

Hi Christi!

Yes, I recognize your name. I'm a delegate from the 49th. Very excited about all the energy and activity this year! Go Obama!

Hi Christi:

From what I have studied in these last few months, I think this is something that should be sent to HQ and the advance team.

I am sure that this little girl is someone Barack would want to meet; but I am also sure that EVERYTHING he does has to be measured against the politics involved...especially in a foreign country and before the election.

I remember when my daughter was in 4th grade in a mostly white school where I was a teacher. That was when "corn rows" were just coming into fashion. I had her hair beautifully braided in an intricate pattern.

After school, she was crying because her so-called friends said they didn't want to play with her and her "burnt-spaghetti head". Believe me, I can feel for that little girl and for Barack. My daughters were teased because they are 1/2 African! Plus, there are a lot of "mixed-race" children in my family...

Excellent question!

It depends on if the the period or question mark is actually part of the quoted passage.

If you are quoting only part of a sentence (which happens more often), the ending quotation mark goes before the period or question mark.

If you are quoting a whole sentence or question, you should make it stand on its own, then the period or question/exclamation mark would go inside.

Example: I heard Barack Obama say: "Yes we can!" (Notice the colon...you could also use a comma.)

Example: Are you sure he said "yes we can"?

Hope that helps!

Thanks, Christi, for your kind words. And yes, absolutely, I share my thoughts here so that others may help themselves to anything they find of value within them. Go get 'em!
