Fieldhands

For readers of The Field, to gather face to face

From another Knoxville forum (I lurk too!) (Scott - I lifted this from your KBlab post -Glostik - I bet this was from you?):

If you non-Knoxvillians read this, the house parties on the 28th are a national push to introduce Obama to those who need more info. It starts with people telling those present why they support Obama. I went to one months ago and took an undecided friend. Anyway, throw one -- it'll be fun. We can get someone to come speak in the Knoxville area.

Hello Vols!

Our biggest ask at this point is for a few people to have Unite for Change House Parties on June 28. This is a national effort by the campaign to begin building grassroots activities in all communities. You can find more info at barackobama.com or call me for more info. Everyone is doing it differently. One group is doing an afternoon cookout from 2-4, another is doing coffee and donuts from 10-12, another is doing a potluck dinner in the evening. It can be 6 people or 60 people, it is totally at your discretion. There is a video you can download from the website to watch and I can give you ideas for community projects and further organizing in your neighborhood, it is also possible to get a speaker with the local campaign if you can give enough notice. We do not have house parties in South Knoxville, Farragut, Fountain City, or East Knoxville as well as several other areas yet...we would love to see parties in each district!

Events this week....

1. Wednesday tabling on Market Square from 10:00 am-2:00 pm. We need 2 vols for this. You sit at our table on the square and sell merchandise and register voters (not too many registrations as this is mostly business people, but we do get a few). We are very low key and let people come to us as signs are posted on the table. Be positive at all times as you are representing Barack Obama!

2. Sundown in the City on Thursday from 5:30 pm-10:00pm. Same as the other tabling on the square, though this one is usually quite busy! We register lots of voters and sell lots of merchandise. We have our own patio space at Bliss, so we are not crowded and we are the only ones on the patio! Bring a camp chair and come on down, we need 4-8 vols for this. If you are there before 6 pm, parking is easy and there is no crowd yet. Again, please remember to be positive, though we are well received 98% of the time, we do have a few outspoken non-supporters on occasion.

3. Farmer's Market on Mkt. Sq. Saturday from 10-2. Same routine. We could use 3 vols for this. Baked goods for sale as well.

4. Pride Event Saturday, June 21 from 2:30-10:00. We could use 6 vols for this, possibly in shifts of 2:30-6:30 and 6:00-10.
We have Carol B. from 3-5 I believe (I have Amy H., Will A., and Bill C. down for this also so please confirm with me by e-mail.)

5. Sunday from 11-2 on Market Square if we can find 2 vols for this.

We may just have an office in the next week or two and we will be asking for vols and office supplies...so be ready!

Thank you so much for your support! Last week when I asked for last minute help many of you who were able stepped up and I can't thank you enough!

Hello hello. We are moving closer to an office and have committed to a space in downtown Knoxville. We could use the following:

- 2 desks
-tables (round or rectangle (or square) or oblong but no parabola)
-desk chairs or any chairs
-computers (cords, usb, firewire and stuff needed for computers)
- printer
- office supplies (like paper, pens, post-its, paperclips, you know the drill)
If you can set up a table at any event for voter registration, we can help. It is a shame but I think we missed Honda Hoot.

And see above for volunteer help we need now. Also, it would be great to have a Unite For Change party in every district in Knox County. We can help with info and tell you what other folks are doing for these if you want to throw one.

so how'd this all go?

A lot of those events are ongoing so need volunteers anytime. The Pride day went well I heard (I missed it). A lot of people came up to the table. Many did have questions on Obama's position.

We need vols for tables this weekend. There is an event in particular I think you would enjoy that we will hopefully have a table at.

In fact, could you please put together a list of the Knoxville July 4 events that you think would be good to have tables present -- you are such an avid paper reader that you might be a good person to do this. Thanks Aggrolee!
